Sauder, Myrl Daniel
January 10, 1939 - September 10, 2021

Myrl Daniel Sauder, 82, passed away September 10, 2021, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo of pancreatic cancer after a long and fruitful life. He was born in Archbold, Ohio, on January 10, 1939, to Erie J. and Leona (Short) Sauder. Myrl’s love of learning began in childhood exploring the world of work and innovation that surrounded him as he watched his parents and others build Sauder Woodworking Co. He graduated from Archbold High School in 1957 and went on to receive a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from The Ohio State University. After receiving his degree, he served in an Indianapolis, Indiana hospital maintenance department for 2 years in lieu of military service. It was there that he met his wife, Freida Gingerich. They married on November 14, 1964.

Myrl then returned to Sauder Woodworking Co. in 1965 and over the years rose to the role of Vice President of Engineering. In 2004, Myrl retired from management and joined the Innovation Group at Sauder to become the “Chief Tinkerer” as he called himself. Throughout his 55-year career at Sauder he led key efforts to invent new products and new machines that would help Sauder become a world class furniture manufacturer. Myrl became the company’s biggest champion for one of its core values of “finding better ways” as evidenced by his 16 patents. Working alongside his brother Maynard, the Sauder companies saw incredible growth going from $12 Million in sales in 1975 to over $500 million in 2000. Work was a joyous and satisfying part of his life where he delighted in interacting with coworkers.

Myrl contributed to the community through sharing his wisdom on numerous boards including serving as Chairman of Sauder Woodworking Board for 8 years, as well as serving on the boards of Sauder Village, Pettisville School, Care & Share, andthe Fulton County Fair Foundation among others. He was also active in Tedrow Mennonite Church serving as a youth group leader for many years with Freida, as an elder, worship leader and on the Finance Committee.

Myrl was known for his humble spirit, and he took genuine interest in others regardless of their status. He had a unique way of brightening one’s day and making each person feel most important. He was a natural leader, not because he sought to be a leader, but because he sought to be a servant to those around him. He loved learning, whether from people or experiences, and knew the value of hard work, but also the importance of having fun. He was as creative in his play as in his work, and often initiated activities that were wildly fun, but less than safe. He valued people over things as shown by his compassionate nature and big heart. He spent a lifetime building a legacy of generosity and servanthood. His greatest desire was to glorify God by using the gifts he had been given.

Myrl and Freida enjoyed 56 years of marriage, and together leave a legacy of generosity and kindness to their family and all who know them. Freida survives along with their three children: Nancy (Doug) Yoder, Daniel (Esmeralda) Sauder, and Julie (Trevor) Crossgrove. Their grandchildren who also survive: Lauren (Cale) Frey, Ashlyn (Aaron) Dunlap, Jordan (Sarah) Bontrager, Aaron and Carly Bontrager, Stephanie (Tim) Slye, Michelle (Mark) Harmon, Kirstin (Alex) Moss, Tessa Yoder, Caleb (Lauren) Yoder, and Micah Yoder; Daniel (Shea) Sauder, Andrew (Maddie) Sauder, Elizabeth Sauder; Lindsey, Harley, and Tara Crossgrove, along with great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. Myrl was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law Delmar and Evelyn Sauder, brother Maynard Sauder, stepsister Elaine (Dave) Graber, and son-in-law, Greg Bontrager.

There will be a public visitation at Founder’s Hall on Tuesday, September 14th and Friday, September 17th from 4-8:00 pm. There will be a private burial at Pettisville Cemetery as well as a private celebration of life service. A livestream of the celebration of life will be available on Saturday, September 18th at 2:30 pm. The livestream link will be available on Grisier Funeral Homes website, www.grisierfh.com, on Myrl’s obituary page. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Sauder Village or Little Eden Camp. The Grisier Funeral Home of Archbold has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Schlabach, Theron F.
December 6, 1933 - May 13, 2021

Theron F. Schlabach, 87, died Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Greencroft Health Care in Goshen, Indiana. He was born December 6, 1933 to Ezra and Vivian (Johns) Schlabach. He married Sara Ann Kauffman on January 8, 1955.

He is survived by a daughter, Kristina Johnson, Goshen; three sons, Gerald (Joetta) Schlabach, Michigan, J. Carlyle (Julie Birky) Schlabach, Arizona, Roderic (Mary Beth) Schlabach, Goshen; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Shaum, Goshen, Arleta (Phil) Kilmer, New Paris; a brother, Dorvin (Ruth) Schlabach, Goshen; a brother-in-law, Emil Broni; and a sister-in-law, Viv Schlabach. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Sara, two brothers, Dale and J. Richard Schlabach, a sister, Eudean Broni, a brother-in-law, Paul Shaum, and a grandson, Brock Birky. He drew great joy in spending time with his family and was at his most vibrant at family gatherings and reunions. After enduring much of the pandemic year in quarantine, he was grateful for the presence of family during his final week of life.

Theron loved to remind people that he was both a professor and a trucker. He had married and begun supporting his family as a big-rig trucker before deciding to go to Goshen College (GC) and then the University of Wisconsin, where he received his doctorate in American social history. Returning to GC in 1965 to teach, he soon resumed trucking as a hobby for a few weeks each summer. Traveling the continent was a way to maintain his working-class roots while visiting historical sites. His biggest life disappointment was that Sara’s death in 2009 dashed his dream of continuing to travel with her well into retirement. Though he officially retired from teaching full-time from GC in 1995 he continued to teach part time into the early 2000s and to pursue his scholarly research and writing much longer. Known among colleagues and students as a craftsman of clear and accessible prose, he is the author of five books and editor of more, including an acclaimed four-volume history of Mennonites in America.

Though rooted in Elkhart County and the Mennonite Church, Theron’s faith and intellectual curiosity combined to guide him towards an increasingly international perspective. He and Sara twice led GC’s international studies program in Costa Rica. He led classes in Europe and travelled to China. He delighted in the international and multicultural breadth of his family, with links from Denmark to Costa Rica to Malaysia, and with great-grandchildren who share roots not only with his German-Swiss ancestors but with Africa, Central America, and the Navajo.

Above all, Theron hoped to be known as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He was baptized at Benton (IN) Mennonite Church. While studying at the University of Wisconsin he helped found the Madison Mennonite Church. He was a member of College Mennonite Church for more than five decades.

A funeral service will be held at Goshen College Mennonite Church at 11 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 19. An opportunity to visit with family will begin at 10 a.m. A private family burial will follow the funeral at the Clinton Union Cemetery in Goshen, Indiana. All in attendance are expected to wear masks for inside events and take other precautions throughout. A livestream of the funeral will be available at www.collegemennonite.org.

Memorial donations may be given to the Jubilee Fund at College Mennonite Church or the Mennonite Historical Library Endowment at Goshen College.

Orie loved and served God throughout his life and wanted to help spread the Gospel of Christ throughout the world. He was a great encourager and urged to always “look for something to do and then do it”, and always stay busy. Orie attended school through 8th grade when he was needed on the farm. It was a great disappointment to Orie that he couldn’t finish school and contributed greatly to his feelings of inferiority through his adult life. So it was a great accomplishment when he was able to get his GED in 1995 at the age of 71. His family celebrated with him.

Orie leaves behind him his wife, Miriam, his children, Alan (Pat Keener) of Moorhead, MN, Anna (Dan Pipek) of Staples, MN, Susan (Curt Martin) of Pillager, MN, and Marlin (Cathy Cole) of Waverly, NY. His stepchildren John (Crissie Musselman) Graber of Goshen, IN, Merlin Graber, Goshen, IN, Millard (Sheila Koch) Graber, Goshen, IN, Carol (Bill Frisbie), Goshen, IN and Galen (Ruth Brenneman) Graber, Wellman, IA, ten grandchildren, fourteen step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, fourteen step great grandchildren, brother Edward of Clarksville, MI and sister Martha (Virgil) Albrecht of Three Rivers, MI.

Sensenig, Dorothy B. Burkholder
September 9, 1928 - September 18, 2021

Dorothy B. Sensenig, 93, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Fairmount Homes. Her husband Earl M. Sensenig passed away on June 15, 2021. They had shared more than 73 years of marriage.

Dorothy was born September 9, 1928, to the late Rev. John W. and Edith (Sensenig) Burkholder. Early in life, she received Jesus as Savior and was baptized at the Weaverland Mennonite Church. As a girl, she had decided that she would marry neither a farmer nor a preacher. However, God so directed her life that she in fact married a farmer who later was called to the ministry.

Dorothy Burkholder married Earl Sensenig on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948, at the bride's home in Blue Ball. The newlyweds moved into the little house on the corner of the farm property on Akron Road, Ephrata Township. Here three children were added to the family. Then Earl and Dorothy moved into the larger farmhouse on the same property, where five more children were born. Earl and Dorothy taught their children the joy of work, play, and learning on a farm. In their retirement years, Earl and Dorothy returned to the "little house," remodeled yet again. In 2019 they moved to Fairmount Homes.

In her quiet way, Dorothy supported Earl as he was called as a minister for the Martindale Mennonite Church in 1970 and then as bishop for the Martindale District (Lancaster Mennonite Conference) four years later.

As an older sister in her childhood home, Dorothy had exercised loving care of her younger siblings. Then as she had children of her own, she expressed that same tenderness. In later years, she had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren to love. She quilted by hand a beautiful quilt for each grandchild. Dorothy was a hard worker who knew how to cook meals and be hospitable to guests. With a smile on her face and kind affection in her heart, she was devoted to loving and caring for others.

Dorothy is survived by eight children: Susan married to John Hollinger, East Earl; Leonard married to Edith (Gehman) Sensenig, McAlisterville; Lowell married to Janet (Weaver) Sensenig, Mohnton; Kenneth married to Karen (Weaver) Sensenig, Ephrata; J. Carl married to Julia (Weaver) Sensenig, Denver; Ann married to Lee Roy Martin, Ephrata; Barbara married to Linford Weaver, Denver; Doris married to Donald Beachy, Denver.

She is survived by 42 grandchildren, 135 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, and by brothers, Roy Burkholder (Helen), Samuel Burkholder (Naomi), and sister Lois Hostetter (Earl). In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Edith Lillian Burkholder and Mae Swan, brothers, Marlin Burkholder (Katie) and John Dan Burkholder (Kathleen), grandson John Earl Hollinger, great-grandson Jadon Gehman, and granddaughter-in-law Gloria Hollinger.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 22, from 5-8 p.m. at the Martindale Mennonite Church, 171 Hurst Road, Ephrata. On Thursday, September 23, an additional viewing will be held 9-10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. at the Martindale Mennonite Church with Bishop Daryl Weaver, Pastor David Sensenig, and Chaplain Eugene Weaver officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

The family thanks the staff at Fairmount Homes for the loving care they provided.

Sensenig, Earl M.
September 4, 1927 - June 15, 2021

Earl M. Sensenig, retired bishop, 93, passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Fairmount Homes, Ephrata. He is survived by his wife Dorothy with whom he recently celebrated 73 years of marriage.

Earl was born September 4, 1927, to the late Aaron L. and Emma (Martin) Sensenig in Hinkletown. He was baptized at the Weaverland Mennonite Church. He graduated from East Cocalico High School in Reamstown in 1944 and pursued a lifelong occupation as a farmer on Akron Road, Ephrata Township.

Earl Sensenig married Dorothy Burkholder on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948, at the bride's home in Blue Ball. The newlyweds moved into the little house on the corner of the farm property on Akron Road, Ephrata Township. Here three children were added to the family. Then Earl and Dorothy moved into the larger farmhouse on the same property, where five more children were born. In their retirement years, Earl and Dorothy returned once again to the "little house," remodeled yet again. In 2019 they moved to Fairmount Homes.

A creative and kind father, Earl obviously enjoyed his large family. He efficiently organized family life and the work on the farm. On many evenings, Earl read stories or drew pictures for his young children. Later he did the same for his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He encouraged his children to do their best in school and to secure an education.

Earl lived and taught the nonresistant Christian faith as a practical way of living. In his household, the church and church leaders were always spoken of with the greatest respect. At the age of 42, Earl was ordained as a minister for the Martindale Mennonite Church, Lancaster Mennonite Conference. Four years later he was ordained as the bishop of the Martindale District of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference, which at that time included the Cambridge, Churchtown, Lichty's, Martindale, and Tamaqua congregations. As the district bishop, Earl performed weddings, officiated at funerals, instructed new believers and led communion services.

As a church leader, Earl led with conservative convictions, patient respect, and an even temper. He taught and practiced the permanence of the marriage covenant. Of his role in leadership, he once remarked, "When people rock the boat, then there also needs to be one who steadies the boat." After his retirement in 1994, he continued a strong interest in church life, occasionally preaching and teaching.

In addition to his wife, Earl is survived by eight children: Susan married to John Hollinger, East Earl; Leonard married to Edith (Gehman) Sensenig, McAlisterville: Lowell married to Janet (Weaver) Sensenig, Mohnton; Kenneth married to Karen (Weaver) Sensenig, Ephrata; J. Carl married to Julia (Weaver) Sensenig, Denver; Ann married to Lee Roy Martin, Ephrata; Barbara married to Linford Weaver, Denver; Doris married to Donald Beachy, Denver. He is also survived by 42 grandchildren, 134 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and a sister, Anna Mary Sauder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Esther Martin (Wilmer); brother-in-law, Christ Sauder; grandson, John Earl Hollinger; great-grandson, Jadon Gehman, and granddaughter-in-law, Gloria Hollinger.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 20, 2021 from 2-4 and 6-8 PMm at the Martindale Mennonite Church, 171 Hurst Road, Ephrata. On Monday, June 21, 2021 an additional viewing will be held from 9-10 AMm., followed by a funeral service at 10 AMm. at the Martindale Mennonite Church with Bishop Daryl Weaver, Pastor David Sensenig, and Chaplain Eugene Weaver officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

The family thanks the staff at Fairmount Homes for the loving care they provided.

November 2, 1927 - December 23, 2021

Velma Arlene Good Shank, 94, of Stanardsville, Va., went to her heavenly home on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021.

She was the youngest daughter of the late John E. Good and Nora Wisman Good.

Shortly after she was three years old, her father died and her mother moved the family from Orange County to Rockingham County on Boyers Road within sight of the now Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Velma attended Peach Grove School and Keezletown High School, where she became an avid fan and player of softball and basketball, and earned the name of Effie Mae. She graduated from EMS in 1944. She worked at EMC and the silk mill for several years and then married Charles Shank on June 22, 1949.

There were three children born to this union, Eileen (Orlin) Campbell, Allen Shank and Janice (Bruce) Morton; nine grandchildren, Todd (Jackie) Campbell, Derrick (Amy) Campbell, Scott (Thea) Campbell, Meredith (Jonathan) Cannone, Sheena and Sara Morton, Samantha (Patrick) Boughton, Honesty and Jeremiah Morton; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Charles Shank, she was preceded in death by her seven siblings, Frances Good Whetzel Barnhart, Carl E. Good, Aubrey Good, John S. Good, Mildred A. Good Barnhart, Austin Good, Edith Good Shank, and one great-grandchild, Gideon Todd Campbell.

Velma was a faithful, loving wife of Charles and together they served the Lord at Zion Hill Mennonite Church (Singers Glen, Va.) before being called to serve at Temple Hill Mennonite Church. This call led them to move from Bridgewater to Greene County in 1956. After several years, they were asked to help at Mt. Hermon Mennonite Church which was four miles away from Temple Hill. Velma taught Sunday School, summer vacation Bible school and transported many community folks to various appointments near and far.

She enjoyed many activities, especially gardening with basic vegetables, fruit trees and blueberry bushes. She made comforters, upholstered furniture and took a small engine repair course so she could fix her own farm and garden tools. She even requested a chainsaw when asked what she wanted one year for Christmas. The grandchildren soon discovered that grandma could fix almost anything that was broken! She was never one for frills and knick-knacks but wanted useful items that she could use to improve the home place. She loved to be around people, to visit and to have visitors. Reading was a favorite quiet pastime. Velma drove a school bus for Greene County Public School for over 30 years.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, at First Bible Baptist Church.

Shrock, LaMar L.
March 11, 1959 - October 30, 2021

LaMar L. Shrock, 62, of Topeka, was welcomed into heaven on Saturday, October 30, where he had the privilege of meeting Jesus and joining his late wife, Lisa. He was born March 11, 1959, to Mose and MaryEtta (Mishler) Shrock. On August 22, 1987, he married Lisa Weldy. Together they built a simple life and raised their two children. Lisa died May 6, 2017.

Surviving are daughter Andrea (Courtney) Miller of Shipshewana; son Austin Shrock of Topeka; two grandchildren, Aiden and Audrey Miller; sister Lorene (Greg) Schrock of Topeka; and a brother Leon Shrock of Wolcottville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and a brother, LaVon.

LaMar will perhaps be remembered most for his belief in the value of hard work and loyalty. He was employed by Yoder Oil Company of Topeka for 30 years and most recently worked for Frick Services in Wawaka. The kids fondly remember him often wanting to return home early from family vacations when they were young so he could get back to work. He was a dedicated employee, and as such exemplified the characteristics he wished to pass along as a father to his children. LaMar enjoyed farming the land passed down to him from his grandparents. He was a member of Emma Church his entire life. He had a love of sports and attended the Chicago Cubs games as a season ticket holder with his son Austin for the past six years.

LaMar had many aspirations for his upcoming retirement years, including wintering in Florida, riding his motorcycle, helping the kids transition to the farm, and attending his grandkids activities.

The family strongly encourages individuals to get vaccinated against COVID-19, as lives continue to be tragically taken much too soon, robbing families of years they could have experienced with their loved ones.

Finally, the family would like to give a special thank you to the Elkhart General Hospital ICU staff. The care LaMar received while hospitalized for 22 days was unmatched. No amount of accolades will ever be enough to provide a proper thank you for treating LaMar and family with the utmost respect. You are true heroes who impact lives each day you walk through the hospital doors.

The family will hold private services. In lieu of flowers and in light of LaMar’s sudden entrance into heaven, the family requests donations be sent to Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury to assist with expenses.
